Nowadays, parents are getting frustrated when their baby is crying, and most of the times they get clueless about the reason. At that time, it feels very hopeless. They just try to think if it is a problem of wet pants or the baby is tired or hungry. So, a team of scientists in the USA is coming up with a new artificial intelligence system which can predict the problems and can evaluate if the crying is for a simple reason or it is for an abnormal reason. If it is the abnormal one, then you can assume that it can be a very serious issue like viral fever or something like that. The process is so simple that it assures the parents to be very helpful and it will be equally useful for the doctors as well. They are thinking to incorporate the AI to each child care centers.

The research paper was published in the last month in a journal of IEEE/CAA  of Automatic Sinica (JAS). It is a publication which was published jointly with the Chinese Association of Automation and IEEE.

The healthcare workers who are very experienced can assume the basic needs of a baby at the proper time. Each and Every reason has a unique pattern of crying. Identifying those reason was a very tough task. But right now, the scientists have already cracked them all. All the solutions are now in our hand.

The scientists have created a new algorithm which is based on automatic speech recognition with which it can easily detect the real reason for crying. Big data was processed by the method of compressed sensing. It is processed to generate a signal which is based on sparse data. The signal is very useful when the baby is crying in a noisy environment. The algorithm which was created by the scientists is independent for every crier. You can easily use them to distinguish various types of cry features and the urgency of their cry.

Lichuan Hu is an associate professor of electrical engineering, the director of digital signal processing laboratory and corresponding author. Her team has conducted the research. He said:

 “like a special language, there are lots of health-related information in various cry sounds. The differences between sound signals actually carry the information. These differences are represented by different features of the cry signals. To recognize and leverage the information, we have to extract the features and then obtain the information in it.”

The scientists assumed that their research work will be applicable to different types of medical issues. It will be very easy to take any kind of decisions in a critical situation. Liu said that:

 “The ultimate goals are healthier babies and less pressure on parents and caregivers,” and she also added that “We are looking into collaborations with hospitals and medical research centers, to obtain more data and requirement scenario input, and hopefully we could have some products for clinical practice.”
