  • Item Dimensions: 26.4 x 23 x 57.9 centimetres

The LG 260 L4 Star is another in a line of well-built LG refrigerators. The lustrous handle on the shiny door provides a sleek and modern look to the product. Multiple air cooling vents designed specifically to ensure proper distribution and circulation of cool air keeps the cooling inside the compartments regular and uniform.

In our testing, we found this refrigerator to be noise-free during operation. LG has designed this refrigerator such that it automatically adjusts the cooling power by the amount of food kept inside the refrigerator.

The refrigerator is also power-efficient and consumes only 193 units per year. LG’s after-sale service shines through as they also provide installation support free of cost.

The Whirlpool 340 L3 has a distinctly unique design. A display panel on the freezer door allows the user to interact with the device.

Whirlpool has provided three sensors, one each on the door freezer and refrigerator compartment which interact with each other to allow for better retention of moisture. The IntelliSensors sense the Load, Ambient weather, and Usage patterns to optimize cooling.

The product is comparatively larger and thus uses Whirlpool’s Fresh Flow system to ensure that all compartments get cooled uniformly. The Fresh Flow system also injects fresh air into the refrigerator to ensure there is no stale air at all, thus leading to fresher food. A Freshoniser inside the vegetable compartment works to reduce oxidization and keep vegetables fresher for longer.

The device can also handle large voltage fluctuations and can operate in the range of 130V to 300V and can, therefore, work independently of a stabilizer. A vegetable crisper with MicroBlock technology keeps vegetables fresh for up to a week while also preventing any bacterial growth. It also provides lifelong protection against contamination in the compartments of the refrigerator.

In our testing, we found that the Whirlpool 245 L2 maintains low temperatures even during long power cuts thanks to its special chilling gel layer that stores cool air which is then released during power cuts to prevent ice from melting and other contents from getting spoilt

With a 3 Star BEE Energy efficiency rating combined with an annual consumption of around 200 units, this is a very power efficient device. Whirlpool employs a special DeepFreeze technology that allows for better ice cream making and prevents crystallization while ice cream freezes. 8. LG 190 L 4 Star Direct Cool Single Door Refrigerator

LG 190 L 4 Star Direct Cool Single Door Refrigerator
LG 190 L
  • Capacity: 190 Litres
  • Warranty: 1 Year (Product)/ 10 Years (Compressor)
  • Energy Efficiency: 4 Star
  • Form Factor: Double Door
  • Defrosting: Manual Defrost
  • Item Dimensions:63.3 x 53.4 x 133 cm

The LG 190 L4 is great to look at. LG has ensured that the product is durable and well built, and a distinct colour palette makes this refrigerator unique to look at.

Given its price point, this product is feature-packed. Besides the modern design, LG includes an energy-efficient and stabilizer free setup. The product works its way through voltage fluctuations and cuts the power when the voltage soars too high. This helps prevent short circuits and massively increases the durability and lifespan of the product.

LG’s new Smart Inverter Compressor makes an appearance. It is amongst the most advanced and energy-efficient compressors on the market today. Smart Connect can be used to connect the refrigerator to a home inverter, and the Compressor adjusts to ensure that the refrigerator keeps cooling even during a power cut while ensuring that energy drawn from the home inverter is low. This is in line with LGs emphasis on nonstop cooling solutions.

LG claims it uses special systems in its Direct Cooling line-up to ensure that ice can be made in less than two hours. In our testing, we found this claim to be true as the LG 190 L4 does make ice quickly but is no match to its double-doored competitors.

LG also provides a unique added feature that is a special drawer to store unrefrigerated vegetables in the base stand of this refrigerator. It took us by surprise and was a nice addition to what was already a great product. Toughened glass shelves are also provided which add to the product’s durability. The shelves can hold weights up to 175 kg.

The door is surrounded by an anti-bacterial gasket that is easy to remove and clean. It adds to LG’s focus on keeping the internals of the refrigerator decontaminated. It also keeps out dust particles that usually get stored in gaskets and also prevents mold spores from growing, which can spoil food stored inside the refrigerator.

The product is also reasonably compact and weighs only 33 kg. With a 4 Star Energy Efficiency rating from BEE and LG’s Smart Compressor, this product doesn’t guzzle up a lot of power and saves the consumer from soaring energy bills.

With its competitive pricing, LG has ensured that this makes a very good buy for budget consumers.

  • Energy Rating: 4 Stars
  • Form Factor: Standard Single Door
  • Defrosting Type: Manual Defrosting required
  • Item Dimensions: 64.9 x 53.2 x 119 Centimetres

First of all, the refrigerator features a truly stylish look that suits the Samsung brand name. The distinctive crown design with soft curves and clean lines give it a sophisticated, elegant, and sleek look. The back is smooth and easy to clean.

This single door refrigerator features direct cooling technology which lets cool air move throughout the refrigerator naturally. No fans or external help is used to circulate this cool air. This saves a lot of electricity, making this model a 4-star rated product.

This direct cool technology also reduces the overall price of the model.

Refrigerators in India generally have conventional compressors that constantly stop or start. This reduces their life and consumes more energy. Digital Inverter Compressor of this model has nine sensors that provide feedback and help inconsistent cooling without constant start and stop of the compressor. This saves 24% energy.

The clear view lamp provides bright light, which makes finding stuff in the refrigerator very easy even in the dark. The lamp is bright yet power efficient.

Due to fluctuating voltages, earlier Indian refrigerators required a separate stabilizer. But Samsung has brought a model that does not need a stabilizer. While testing, we found that for too much increase or decrease of voltage, the refrigerator automatically switches off for safety.

The toughened glass shelves can carry a lot of weight. We tried subjecting it to various weight tests. It safely held a weight of around 150 kg without cracking. Larger space and toughened glass allow you to keep heavy pots and pans inside the refrigerator.

It features an anti-bacterial gasket that doesn’t allow bacteria and fungi to accumulate inside. This keeps your food fresh.

One common problem in refrigerators of India is storing water and cold drink bottles. They don’t seem to fit in the refrigerator. But in this model, we were able to fit even 2-litre bottles! So now it’s very convenient to stock your refrigerator for the coming summer.

There is a temperature adjustment dial that can be used to adjust the refrigerator temperature as per season. Also, you have to defrost the freezer manually. But it is not difficult at all. Just press the defrost button. Simple.

  • Energy Rating: 3 Stars
  • Form Factor: Standard Single Door
  • Defrosting Type: Manual Defrosting required
  • Item Dimensions: 53.6 x 64.9 x 119.2 Centimetres

Whirlpool has addressed one of the most pertinent problems Indians and Indian refrigerators face, that of power cuts. When we tested this model, we got 8.5 hours of cooling retention during power cuts! That is pretty impressive. The Advanced Insulated Capillary Technology made it possible.

It is a popular choice for many out there. The look and design of the refrigerator are quite modern, especially the pocket-handle at the top. This gives a sleek look to the refrigerator.

Though it is big, with a 190-litre capacity, to make more room inside, Whirlpool has opted for wired shelves. These reduce the space taken up by shelves and allow storing larger utensils. During testing, we saw that wired shelves are more flexible than glass shelves.

The honey-comb design of the vegetable crisper and a unique advanced moisture slider lock the moisture in. Due to this, the moisture content within the vegetables remains optimum, keeping them fresh for a longer period.

There is an inbuilt stabilizer that handles the fluctuating voltage without any issue. It can handle a voltage range of 130 V to 300 V.

The bottle rack is aptly called Jumbo Bottle Rack. We were able to fit three 2-litre bottles in it easily. Even the freezer capacity is slightly larger as compared to its same segment competitors. The Quick Ice technology makes ice faster as compared to most of the other similar refrigerators.

You get a handy egg tray. We also found the milk tray very useful. The milk packets remained safe in there, and it saves space on the shelves to keep other stuff. If milk packets are kept on shelves, you cannot stack anything over them, as they may get pierced.

Another very important feature is the removable anti-bacterial gasket. This airtight gasket prevents the accumulation of bacteria and fungi inside the refrigerator. It keeps the door liner clean. We can easily remove it, clean it, and fix it again.

It is a value for money deal according to us.

  • Energy Rating: 3 Stars
  • Form Factor: Double Door
  • Defrosting Type: Frost free
  • Item Dimensions: 70.8 x 59.8 x 171 Centimetres

The look of the refrigerator goes perfectly well with your modern kitchen. The finesse with which it is designed is simply outstanding. The Silver Brush Line colour is visually very appealing.

The One Hour Icing technology brings the entire freezer temperature to -5 degree Celsius in just 60 minutes. This is possible due to longer condenser coils and heavy-duty PUF insulation, which prevents heat loss.

Being a frost-free refrigerator, you do not have to manually or regularly defrost it. It has an Auto-Defrost system that does not allow ice to build up.

Another fantastic feature of this model is that it has larger cooling pads. This allows the cooling effect to be retained inside the refrigerator for up to 10 hours in case of a power cut.

We found this Haier model to cool our foodstuff uniformly. The 360-degree cooling facility rotates the cold air throughout the refrigerator in a uniform manner. It ensures that air does not get blocked at any particular area. The humidity level is also kept optimum.

The twist ice maker trays were extremely handy as they made removing ice hassle-free. With most of the stackable ice trays in Indian refrigerators, one has to remove and apply too much pressure to remove the use. This can break the trays. Have no such fear in this case.

One of the most important parts of the refrigerator is the compressor. With Haier, you get a 10-year warranty on the compressor. That is quite a long time. This shows the quality of the parts used in the refrigerator.

Being a 335-litre model, you get ample space inside. A special utility box is convenient to store your medicines and cosmetics. The box keeps them safe and separate from foodstuffs. The bottle storage space too is large.

We found the refrigerator to operate without stabilizers in the range of 135 V to 290 V.

The toughened glass shelves can carry a lot of weight. The shelves are adjustable and allow keeping larger vessels.

An important feature we liked was the advanced temperature and freezer control system. It allows setting the temperature as per your wish.

Let’s get straight to the point. It consumes less electricity than a 60W CFL! Yes, it is true. Our extensive use during testing showed a massive saving in our electricity usage and consequently the bill.

The Protton World Series has won the Good Design Award, 2015 and rightly so. It has an exquisite look and is sure to turn everyone’s eyes towards itself. It’s not just a refrigerator; it is a style statement.

The 6th Sense Active Fresh Technology of the Protton World Series keeps your fruits and vegetables fresh for a longer time.

The zeolite technology prevents the excessive ripening of fruits and vegetables. The natural moisture content is maintained at an optimum level by moisture retention technology. The micro block technology prevents 99% bacterial growth.

You get a dedicated 32-litre drawer right at the bottom for your fruits and vegetables. It is very correctly called the Active Fresh Zone. It prevents the mixing of odors and helps keep fruits and vegetables fresh for a longer time.

Ethylene emission causes the ripening of fruits and vegetables. Some fruits and vegetables release ethylene which affects other products. The zeolite technology absorbs ethylene and keeps fruits and vegetables fresher for a longer duration.

What we liked the most was the separate deli zone to store our favourite delicacies. It has a temperature dial with three temperature settings. It works like a charm. You can even store dairy products in it. There is a separate egg tray too.

Three toughened glass shelves help segregate the compartments. They can be removed to increase space between shelves. The Air Booster helps circulate cold air uniformly in all the compartments, thus assisting in uniform cooling.

The ice twister makes it very easy to remove and collect ice from ice trays. The freezer section at the top has a separate can holder to keep beverage cans and small bottles. The can holder can also be used for keeping frozen food.

If you want modern technology, trendy style, and affordable pricing, then Haier is one of the best brands to choose from. In 2014, Haier had the world’s largest market share in consumer products like refrigerators, washing machines, and microwave ovens.

Haier specializes in refrigerator manufacturing as the refrigerator was its first product. Its collaboration with German company Liebherr brought in advanced technology and equipment. It entered India in 2004 but is now considered among the top 20 most trusted brands in India.

Haier refrigerators in India have been innovated by keeping Indian conditions in mind. Indians regularly face power cuts. Haier used larger cooling pads to keep the food well frozen even if there is a power cut for several hours.

In India, we generally have to buy a separate stabilizer for refrigerators. With Haier, you won’t need one. Also, its full DC inverter compressor runs at variable speed depending on the cooling requirement. This saves electricity.

4. Samsung

The name has become synonymous with an exceptional quality brand. It is the market leader in India when it comes to consumer appliances and electronics. People believe that anything that Samsung makes is aesthetically and ergonomically beautiful. Its products are proof of it.

Samsung entered the refrigerator market a little late (1974) as compared to others, but it brought with itself decades of electronics’ experience. This clubbed, with its rich looks placed it among the top brands in this section.

It has launched India’s first digital inverter technology. It is common knowledge that refrigerators don’t run on general home inverters. Samsung’s digital inverter technology allows the refrigerator to run on your home inverter too. This is a phenomenal advancement, especially for Indian households that face regular power cuts.

The digital inverter compressor reduces electricity usage. During power cuts, Samsung refrigerators are known to remain cool for more than 6 hours. Some newer models can remain cool up to 9 hours.

Refrigerators in India – The Buyer’s Guide

A refrigerator is now considered a standard household appliance and not a luxury that signifies that you belong to the upper-middle class. With a production of 4 million units a year, the refrigerator market in India is booming and on average grows at 15% every year. One in every three Indian households owns a refrigerator, and it is second only to television in its market penetration.

The reason is not difficult to understand. Much of the subcontinent is unbelievably hot for about ten months of the year, and food preservation is of paramount importance. A refrigerator makes life easy by allowing the purchase of fresh foods and vegetables once every 3-4 days. Also, there is no longer the need to throw away any leftovers since they can be stored easily.

As soon as you walk into a showroom, you are confronted by a huge variety of refrigerators from various brands. The constant chatter by salesmen who are eager to unload the one which brings in the most profit for their dealership makes it hard to pick the best model on the spot.

That is why we have put together a complete buying guide covering every aspect of refrigerator purchase in India.

1. What Is A Refrigerator?

In essence, it is a box that has a temperature of about 3° C inside. The box has two compartments (a configuration that may vary as you will find below) – a freezer chamber and a refrigerator compartment.

The working of a refrigerator is very similar to that of an air conditioner. An AC cools several hundred cubic feet to 22° C, and a refrigerator cools a few cubic feet to 3° C.

At the back of every refrigerator, there is a compressor. Its task is to compress the refrigerant gas to liquid form by using pressure. The liquid circulates in the coils that you can find at the back of the refrigerator and transfers its heat to the surrounding air.

At the end of the coil is an expansion valve that allows the pressure to be released and the liquid again turns back to vapor. This stage happens in the evaporator coils of the freezer chamber. As it vaporizes, it absorbs heat from inside the refrigerator and consequently cools it.

The gas returns to the compressor, and the cycle starts all over again. This is repeated many times every minute till the refrigerator cools down considerably with the temperature inside the freezer chamber at -5° C and in the refrigerator compartment at 3° C. When the entire box is cool enough, a thermostat switch shuts off the compressor power supply to prevent excessive cooling. As the refrigerator slowly warms up, the thermostat turns the compressor, back on.

2. Number Of Doors

A refrigerator can be classified by the number of doors, and this is often included in the product description. A refrigerator can be a single door, double door, triple door, and side by side.

2.1 Single Door

Single door refrigerators are usually less than 250 litres in capacity (litres refer to the gross volume of the entire machine, including all the chambers). They are cheaper to manufacture and cost less than double door counterparts.

Single door refrigerators are ideal for small families with no more than two members. They use direct cooling and are not frost-free (there are exceptions such as Haier 168 L Frost-Free Single Door, but they are rare).

Single Door models are ideal for very hot areas as there is no barrier between the freezer coils and the rest of the refrigerator.

2.2 Double Door

These are by far the most popular variation sold in the urban Indian refrigerator market and range from 240 litres to 420 litres in capacity. This makes them suitable for quite large families with 4-6 members. All double door refrigerators are frost-free. As we shall see later, this is a quite handy feature.

Being larger they consume more electricity, but being frost-free, they can be more energy efficient. The cheaper models have the freezer chambers at the top, and more expensive double doors have the freezer at the bottom.

Bottom mounts make it possible to use the refrigerator compartment without leaning since it is mounted higher.

It makes no difference to the functioning of the machine, and it is a matter of convenience for the user if it is top or bottom mounted.

Single Door vs Double Door

2.3 Triple Door

Triple door refrigerators have another compartment or rather a very cold refrigerator compartment and a not so cold one. Some items that you store, such as milk and leftover food need to be chilled to 3° C while vegetables last longer at about 12° C. The third chamber is used to store fruits and vegetables.

It is not that a triple door means a larger refrigerator but one that is more complex in design. The third door is often replaced by a drawer.

2.4 Side by Side Refrigerator

Introduced recently in India, these are the most expensive. As a refrigerator gets larger (over 350 litres), its dimensions grow, and it becomes difficult to open the door due to its width (as the refrigerator grows larger, the door grows wider).

Side by Side refrigerators solves this problem by having two doors with hinges on both sides. These machines also have more sub-chambers inside for dedicated use and are usually above 550 litres in capacity.

There are also Side by Side refrigerators available with bottom mount freezer drawers.

Triple Door vs Side by Side

3. Convertible Storage

The usual design provides the freezer chamber about 20% of the volume of the refrigerator. So a 300-litre fridge has a 60-litre freezer. But this amount of freezer volume is mostly unnecessary. Convertible refrigerators allow you to change the space dedicated to the freezer and change it to a refrigerator. It is a useful innovation but is available only in premium models.

Convertible refrigerator models provide an exceptional level of functionality that is worth it even at a higher price. In some models, you can change the entire fridge into a freezer and back again. Of course, the more complex a machine, the harder it is to maintain it. But on the whole, refrigerators are dependable and sturdy machines.

4. Type Of Cooling

4.1 Direct Cool

Direct Cool refrigerators are very simple. The freezer chamber is at the top, and the space below it is the refrigerator compartment. There is no physical barrier between the two. The evaporator coils cool the freezer chamber and due to convection cold air descends to the bottom of the compartment pushing up warmer air.

The advantage of this technology is that it is cheaper and easier to manufacture and repair. The disadvantage is that in humid countries such as India, there’s a massive accumulation of ice in the freezer chamber and it has to be manually defrosted. After a couple of days, the power has to be switched off till the ice has melted.

Also, the top of the compartment is cooler than the bottom. Thus, anything kept on the topmost shelf of the refrigerator is chilled while food stored in bottom shelves is warmer.

It is not possible to build large refrigerators using this technology. They will not be very efficient and show a marked change in temperature in different areas.

4.2 Frost Free

This is the prevailing technology for the last two decades. The freezer chamber is separate from the refrigerator compartment.

The cold air from the freezer is driven by one or more fans into the refrigerator compartment. Every so often depending on the outside temperature, the freezer compartment defrosts automatically before much ice can accumulate. It is not that it is frost-free, but because the frost is removed before it becomes noticeable.

Direct Cool vs Frost Free

Even if this auto defrosting happens once every four hours, the refrigerator compartment remains cold since it is, in essence, a different unit.

Since fans bring in the cold air, the fridge cools evenly at every level. Also, the speed and duration of the fan operation make it possible to select at what temperature the refrigerator compartment will be.

If one day you have simply vegetables in the refrigerator compartment, you can set it to 10° C and the freezer to -2° C and save electricity.

But when you are preparing for a party, and there is a lot of food that could become spoilt, set the refrigerator for 3° C and the freezer for -8° C.

Hence, it is flexible and needs no human intervention to remain free from ice.

The drawback is that it is more expensive to manufacture, and a greater number of parts means more possibility of break down.

Above 250 litres, you have to buy frost-free, and below 220 litres you would have to buy Direct Cool.

You have no control over the type of cooling you want, only the capacity and number of doors.

5. Capacity

This is the most important question when buying a refrigerator in India. How big should it be? And unfortunately, there is no fixed answer.

For a very small family of 2 people, a 200 litre fridge should be enough, but 250 litres would be better.

For a family of four, it should be 300-400 litres. For bigger families, it has to be decided if they want one refrigerator that is 550 litres or two 300 litre machines.

Also, there are other factors peculiar to the Indian market.

If your family consumes food prepared in advance (cook on Sunday and eat on Wednesday) then the larger, the better. If you consume only freshly made food, then a 250-litre refrigerator that can be used for storing only milk, and fresh veggies are more than enough.

In general, in bigger cities, a 260-350 litres fridge is required for a family of four. But this is a gross generalization and only indicative.

6. Inverter Compressor

Is Inverter Refrigerator beneficial

A regular compressor (in use till about two years ago) was binary – either it was on and working at full capacity or off. The compressor used to start and work at 100% capacity until your fridge was cold enough and then stop till the fridge warmed up a little bit.

An inverter compressor can idle its speed. That is in layman’s terms it can drop its working from 100% to 70% when the fridge is cold enough.

How does it help? There are no peaks and troughs of cooling. The temperature inside is steady, and the compressor works at less than full capacity.

The reason it is required is that a non-inverter compressor consumes a lot of amperes at startup. It also causes strain on the compressor as it continually warms up and cools down. This leads to undesirable wear and tear that reduces the life of a device.

It is suggested by different brands that inverter compressors use up to 40% less electricity. An inverter compressor is also far less noisy.

Most modern refrigerators have done away with the thermostat and replaced it with electronic circuitry attached to the compressor, and hence we hear about digital inverter technology.

At one time the preserve of premium models, the digital inverter is now the standard frost-free refrigerator mechanism.

7. BEE Star Rating

Unlike an air conditioner or geyser, a refrigerator runs constantly. This means it is using electricity nearly always. That is why the Bureau of Energy Efficiency star ratings are of huge importance.

BEE Star Rating

Of course more the stars more the cost. But do not only look at upfront costs. In cities where electricity is expensive, even one unit per day of excess electricity translates to over Rs. 200 per month or Rs. 2400 in a year. Over a decade that is at least Rs. 24,000 (actually a lot more since electricity prices rises every two years) which is the price of a brand-new 300-litre fridge.

The greater the number of stars, the more energy-efficient your refrigerator is. The star system is tied to the year of certification. A refrigerator which is 5 Stars now will become a 3-Star a few years down the line.

8. Additional Desirable Features

Water Dispenser – Side by Side refrigerators have this facility whereby you can obtain cold water from a tiny recessed tap in the door without opening the fridge. It can also dispense ice cubes from a chute.

Convertible Technology – We have discussed convertible fridges above, but some companies have added a lot of complex features with a Normal Mode, Vacation Mode, Seasonal Mode which allows a precise setting of the fridge temperature in specific areas of the fridge.

Adjustable Shelving – Most refrigerators have shelves that can be moved a little higher or lower, but some have fully adjustable shelves allowing you to store larger items by customizing the interior configuration.

In some fridges, half of a shelf can be removed, making it possible to have the double-height for the shelf below.

Long Cooling Retention – Many brands offer advanced cooling retention that allows a refrigerator to stay cool for quite a few hours. If your locality suffers from power cuts, this is an advantage since food will not be spoiled even if the machine is not working for six hours or more.

Voltage Stabiliser – This is now a standard feature, and most refrigerators have a built-in stabilizer. For the sake of safety, it is better to buy an external stabilizer also.

Smart Refrigerators – This is the latest innovation to hit the Indian market. They connect with your smartphone and the internet. LG and Samsung are the only brands in India that offer smart refrigerators. Samsung Smart Hub refrigerators have cameras that allow you to see inside without opening the fridge. Smart touch-screens allow you to plan your meal and place an order for fresh groceries from the refrigerator.

9. How to select the best option?

  • Eating Habits –

Your daily consumption levels and the type of food you consume can play an important role in determining the type of refrigerator best suited to your needs. Most refrigerators are sold by their “fridge to freezer ratio”. So if you are a vegetarian, you should opt for an 80:20 variant which will give you enough space to store all your vegetables. For non-vegetarians, 70:30 is the optimal choice.

People who eat fresh produce and dairy items would benefit from using refrigerators with a two-door setup as it provides ample storage space and most food items are easily accessible.

For those who eat a lot of frozen food, a side-by-side refrigerator is the correct choice as it has more storage shelves for frozen food and it is easy to reach.

  • Energy Efficiency Rating –

Refrigerators are rated according to energy efficiency from one to five stars. Unlike a geyser or an air conditioner, a refrigerator runs all day. It is constantly consuming electricity and therefore BEE ratings are very important. Five star-rated refrigerators are usually very expensive but in most cases, the price is justified as the high monthly savings on the electricity bill redeem the premium price.

In addition to the financial benefit it brings, using energy-efficient refrigerators is simply good for the environment and something all consumers should consider when making a purchase.

  • Go Frost Free –

In frost-free refrigerators, the cooling is done using a separate fan. This is unlike the Direct Cool refrigerators which rely on natural convection currents for the cooling. The fan-led cooling allows frost-free refrigerators to maintain consistent temperatures and keep the food fresh for a longer duration. Frost-free refrigerators do not require any manual defrosting or de-icing. Overall, this is the next step in the evolution of refrigerators and Direct Cool variants are becoming obsolete.

  • Built-in Stabilizer –

Stabilizer free setups work very steadily and reliably. They prevent electrical damage or shorting if there are any voltage fluctuations. In the case of extreme fluctuations, it automatically cuts the power. Such refrigerators help you save the money you would have spent otherwise in buying an external stabilizer.

Refrigerator FAQs

1. How can newer technology keep food safe and cool even during power cuts?

Modern refrigerators maintain low temperatures even during long power cuts due to a special chilling gel layer that stores cool air which is then released during power cuts to prevent ice from melting and other contents from getting spoilt. Also, power backup features allow the refrigerator to be connected to a home inverter and the refrigerator goes into a low powered standby mode where it keeps the food fresh using a minimal amount of power.

Why should one avoid stuffing food in a refrigerator?

Stuffing your fridge full is one of the most common mistakes people make. Too much food can obstruct the flow of air within the fridge, making the fridge work harder to cool all compartments uniformly and will nevertheless leave certain areas warmer than others. It is essential to maintain a good airflow inside the fridge that can ensure uniform cooling all around. Avoid placing food along the back or the sides of the fridge. Also, keep a minimum distance between the food items to ensure an uninterrupted airflow.

How is R600a a better coolant than CFCs?

R600a, also known as butane, is a highly flammable gas that has a very low Global Warming Potential (GWP) and a very low Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) compared to ChloroFluoroCarbons. Also, refrigerators that use R600a are more optimized as requisite levels of cooling can be reached at lower pressures thereby making it easier for the condenser to work at a higher efficiency.

Verdict

It is hard to choose between refrigerators. It depends on the capacity and number of doors that you require.

But assuming that this review would be in general used by a family with no more than four members our final choice would be pared down to LG 260 L 4 Star Frost Free Double Door Refrigerator and the Samsung 275 L 3 Star Frost Free Double Door Refrigerator.

They are both priced at Rs. 25,000 and are the same almost capacity with double doors and digital inverter compressor.

In our eyes, the Samsung edges out its competitors due to the LCD. Just click the temperature you want in the outer panel for freezer and refrigerator, and it is set. Also, the recessed handle makes it sophisticated to look at.

Coming in at #2 the LG is by no means a slacker and boasts of a 4-star rating along with a smart diagnosis tool.
