IFB has always been well known as a top-notch homegrown brand name when it comes to home appliances.

Their line of top-loading washing machines is extraordinarily reputed for excellent build quality and durability. The focus of IFB design is premium devices that are perfect for any home.

We found that machine comes with 14 different wash modes that allow you to wash all types of clothes through different spin dry cycles. The innovative features include Aqua Energie, which is a component that energizes water and dissolves detergent powder better to provide a more thorough wash.

There is also Ball Valve Technology that allows a float valve to allow the water to escape but retains the detergent and prevents wastage.

Moreover, there is an unbalanced load correction feature that allows redistribution of clothing inside the drum to arrange its weight. Without this feature, it is easy for the axle of the motor to become damaged. The motor is one of the most expensive parts to replace, and the Auto Balancing System is beneficial.

With a built-in timer, you can start the wash from 30 minutes to 24 hours after you load the clothes. The patented 3D wash cycle makes sure that all of your items of clothing are soaked and churned equally well.

LG is a very famous name in the Indian washing machine market. From televisions to refrigerators, they produce innovative products and are priced competitively. The other advantage of buying LG is its extensive dealership and service network.

Due to direct drive, the LG washing machines can deliver enormous torque or turning power. That lack of a belt drive means less moving parts and as well as reduced vibration and noise.

This washing machine boasts of a 6-speed motor that can easily turn the drum in alternating directions, making sure that the toughest stains are removed.

An inverter motor means that it can change the speed of the motor through a wide range of revolutions and adjust itself to the type of clothes that are being washed.

A novel feature is the auto restart. If there is no power, then the washing machine remembers the sequence and starts where it left off.

The touch panel is completely waterproof, and you need not be afraid of touching it with wet hands. Safety from electrical shocks is considerable concern among housewives and LG has addressed this with a perfectly sealed configuration.

Stubborn stain requires warm water. An in-built heater can heat water to 85° C if needed. The temperature can be step controlled, such as washing at 40° C for 15 minutes and 60° C for 2-3 minutes to remove bacteria and allergens.

The other unique feature is the use of a smart app and also a self-diagnosis mechanism. The SmartThinQ app will let you and the service center know of all the possible errors through self-diagnosis.

A 2 years warranty on product and 10 years on the motor is provided by the company. Compactly built and with very low noise level it is ideal for home use without causing disruptions with the trademark thumping sound that many washing machines produce.

Samsung is probably the most well-known name in electronics and appliances across the world. The company has been selling home appliances in India from 1997, and they key USP that all their products have, is being designed for Indian conditions.

This care that the design and development team takes to make each product perfect makes it a pleasure to buy and operate Samsung fridge, television, and washing machines.

This is evident from the brand new Eco Bubble technology. Used in this mode the drum spins at a slower speed, but millions of bubbles make the detergent clean entirely even at low settings. And the great thing is, it can do this also if the water is 20° C cold.

The inverter motor can deliver high to a low speed of 1200-800 RPM for several minutes without any overheating and is durable. Samsung certifies it to work for over 20 years. Though our own tests lasted about 2 weeks, when we took the machine apart, the wonderful machining of the motor showed that this may indeed be true.

The drum can self cleanse, and there is no need for you to use bleach or other harsh chemicals from keeping it in pristine and pathogen-free conditions. There is a rapid wash program that can quickly soak and clean lightweight loads in no time at all.

The most brilliant part of the design is Diamond Drum technology that washes fabrics carefully and gently. In every way, it will make the washing and drying process quick and efficient.

  • Boasts of a full set of features
  • Well suited for large families
  • Has a warranty of 2 years on product, 10 years on motor

4. IFB 6 kg Fully-Automatic Front Loading Washing Machine (Diva Aqua SX, Silver, Inbuilt Heater)

IFB 6 kg Fully-Automatic Front Loading Washing Machine (Diva Aqua SX, Silver, Inbuilt Heater)
IFB 6 kg Fully-Automatic
  • Capacity: 6 kg
  • Type of Control: Fully automatic
  • Form Factor: Frontloading

If you are looking for a budget front loading machine for a small family look no further. The IFB 6 kg fully front loading washing machine is good quality and long-lasting.

The Crescent Moon Drum has specially designed grooves that create the perfect water turbulence needed for a great wash.

The new and innovative 2D washing system uses a shower mechanism that soaks clothes thoroughly and makes sure that the soap bubbles reach every corner. There is a floating ball valve that is useful for retaining soap but flushing out water. This reduces your expenses on detergents.

The focus of our lab tests was the automated load balancing mechanism of IFB. This is an exceptional engineering feature that reorganizes the load so that it is distributed equally around the drum. Any tilting of the weight makes the axle wear out quickly, and IFB has sought to correct it through an auto balancer.

The company which specializes in washing machine builds them to last, and they are not afraid to let it be known through the extended warranties which they offer. It has a 4-year comprehensive warranty that is unmatched by rivals and a 10-year selective warranty on various spare parts.

The water consumption of 45 liters is slightly higher than the other 6 kg machines we have tested in the past, but a few liters of water would not be a problem in most places.

With 15 wash programs and an auto restart memory function, it stands apart from its rivals providing perfect wash year after year.

Bosch is a famed German name that has been around for decades and is well known for making appliances that last long. Germans are experts at mechanical engineering, and the repute Bosch enjoys is only to be expected. The latest technology makes it possible that this washing machine uses the least amount of water possible.

The most useful feature we found is Active Water, which allows only the amount of water needed depending on the load. This reduces the gross weight of the drum, and it uses less power leading to saving in electricity bills. One has to remember that washing machines use a lot of electricity and even some savings go a long way.

Another useful aspect is that it works well, even if water pressure is low. Even at 0.3 bars of water pressure, the machine works just fine. It has been designed to be ideal for a small family.

If you are late for work use the 15’/30′ function that would allow you to wash the soiled laundry of up to 2 kilos with a 15-minute wash and 30-minute dry cycle. If you need more help, there is Speed Perfect that is designed to lower the washing cycle time if you are in a hurry. In our tests, we found that indeed the company’s claim that it saved 65% time was accurate.

With a timer that can countdown from 24 hours, you could load your soiled clothes and leave home. The Bosch washing machine would correctly clean them even if you are not at home.

In our analyses, the Bosch worked as you would expect of a premium brand. It was silent and had minimal vibration. The clothes were superbly rinsed, and the end effect was more than satisfactory.

  • Superb quality of engineering
  • Saves water and power due to Active Wash
  • Perfect for small family units
  • Long 10-year warranty
  • Child lock makes it safe
  • Not too many service centers in Tier-II cities
  • The motor is rated at only 800 RPM

6. Samsung 6.5 kg Inverter Fully-Automatic Front Loading Washing Machine (WW65M206L0W/TL, White, Inbuilt Heater)

Samsung 6.5 kg Inverter Fully-Automatic
  • Capacity: 6.5 kg
  • Type of Control: Fully automatic
  • Form Factor: Frontloading
  • Weight: 54 kg
  • Maximum RPM: 1000

The second model that we feature from Samsung’s stable has a capacity of 6.5 kg. If in a pinch you could make it work for a family of four through it is better suited for a family of three.

Built with digital inverter technology that delivers variable speed, the motor carries an enormous 10-year warranty. The company provides assurance that it will not need repair for 20 years. That fact cannot be tested, but we can vouch that it is well made and solidly built.

Equipped with inbuilt ceramic heaters, it heats water quickly without requiring frequent scaling. Samsung brings its patented Silver Wash technology that releases silver ions to prevent the buildup of bacteria in clothes.

State of the art Quick Wash takes care of your dirty clothes in a jiffy, and if you are in a hurry, this is the perfect machine to have. The Diamond Drum Technology squeezes the clothes gently and keeps them in brand new condition.

An Eco Bubble pump delivers air bubbles that add to the foaminess and provides better wash at less speed. It is due to such intriguing new features that Samsung has become a household name. Very quiet and vibration-free, it is suitable for operation at any time of day or night without disturbing others.

A tempered glass window gives you an ideal vantage point to look inside and find out how well the wash is proceeding. Not only does it clean thoroughly, but most importantly, we found that it cleans evenly regardless of the size or material of the load.

  • Designed for Indian homes
  • Uses a small quantity of water
  • Has water heater
  • 10-year warranty on motor and Eco Bubble mechanism
  • Easy to install
  • The motor is only rated at 1000 RPM
  • Not available in colors other than white

7. Bosch 8 kg/5 kg Inverter Washer Dryer (WVG30460IN, White, Inbuilt Heater)

Bosch 8 kg/5 kg Inverter Washer Dryer (WVG30460IN, White, Inbuilt Heater)
Bosch 8 kg/5 kg Inverter Washer Dryer
  • Capacity: 8 kg
  • Type of Control: Fully automatic
  • Form Factor: Frontloading
  • Weight: 156 kg
  • Maximum RPM: 1500

In our review spanning a month, this was the most expensive model that we tested.

This latest design from Bosch has Variodrum technology, which makes sure that water and detergents are spread evenly through the load. The gentle wash that it provides is excellent for your clothes but makes the stains disappear.

The Active Water mode allows just enough water commensurate with the load to enter and pref vents wastage. It is this kind of new and unique feature that makes Bosch stand out as one of the world-leading brands.

The inverter motor is also brushless and ensures that the motor is noiseless and vibration-free. This washing machine is very heavy, and the weight dampens out any shaking.

With Speed Perfect, you can curtail the wash time as our experience with the other Bosch model had shown. It makes your clothes grime-free in less than half the time if you use this mode.

The reload function allows you to open it while its cycle is running and add anything you might have forgotten. This is a handy feature, indeed. Moreover, the dryer can detect the humidity from your clothes and stop running automatically when they are dry.

The large drum can handle 8 kg, and that is a load large enough for a family of five. The dryer can run with 5 kg of washed clothes. The drum is the largest that we have seen in this segment and equipped with a self-cleaning function.

The control panel is entirely waterproof, ensuring your safety at all times.

  • Well designed and high precision device
  • Manufactured under strict quality control
  • 10-year warranty on motor
  • Large LED Display
  • Built-in ceramic water heater
  • Extremely heavy and difficult to move
  • Quite noisy during the spinning cycle at 74 dB

Whirlpool is a reputed American manufacturer of white goods. In India, Whirlpool is very well known for its refrigerators and air conditioners.

But in our tests, we found that they are equally adept at building top washing machines. With the patented 6th Sense technology, the machine can automatically sense the load and fill up the drum accordingly with water.

Also, it can move through six types of tumble with Soft Move technology for different fabrics, and the feature is auto-adjusted by the device itself. This is the only model in our lineup to boast a Made in Europe tag, and that adds to its pedigree. No doubt that the made in Europe tag contributes to superior quality.

As front-loading machines become more popular, there is a growing demand for new models that are available every year. Whirlpool fills this niche with this medium-sized washer.

There is always the fear that a front-loading machine could be mistakenly opened by a child. The door has a secure baby lock that prevents a toddler from accidentally opening it.

To save power, it has an energy-efficient motor and direct drive that reduces friction and vibration. With 14 wash programs, you could find a washing cycle that perfectly suits your needs. If you are in a hurry just use Rapid 30 and the clothes would be clean of stains in half an hour. This saves both time and energy.

There can be no doubt that Whirlpool has brought to the market a winner that will be well received.

  • Excellent value for money
  • Made in Europe
  • Most energy-efficient model
  • Durable build
  • Steam Care imparts 6 hours of freshness to clothes.
  • Does not have inverter motor
  • Not fully vibration-free

Panasonic is a well-known brand in India due to its overwhelming presence in consumer electronics. But the company also produces top-quality consumer durables or white goods.

With 16 different wash programs, the washing machine is suitable for any type of task you want to throw at it. The novel feature is Pre Wash that allows you to wash out the most offending and stubborn stains effortlessly. An 8 kg capacity means that you could wash clothes for 5 people with no problem at all.

Equipped with a powerful direct-drive motor, the Panasonic washing machine delivered perfect performance during our long tests and worked well with cotton, woolen, and linen.

With the Speed Wash setting, it can complete a cycle in as little as half an hour. This is especially handy when you are short on time and in a rush to leave home. Not only that but the machine provides additional drying to take out excess moisture and make the clothes ready for ironing straight away. Most washing machines leave a trace of dampness in the clothes but not this one.

There is no need to worry if the power blacks out. The useful auto-restart resumes the cycle when power returns by itself. It also adds two more minutes to the cycle to give a thorough wash and rinse.

If you think you poured in too much detergent no cause for concern since the washing machine will go into Extra Rinse mode to remove the excess very capably.

We found this to be an excellent 8 kg machine at this price point.

  • Very affordable
  • High speed 1200 RPM motor
  • Highly durable and with exceptional after-sales support
  • 2 years on product, 10 years on motor covers you against breakdown
  • Completely safe with waterproof panels
  • The programming and menu are not intuitive
  • Difficult to read LED display

10. LG 9 kg Inverter Wi-Fi Fully-Automatic Front Loading Washing Machine (FHT1409SWL, Luxury Silver, Inbuilt Heater)

LG 9 kg Inverter Wi-Fi Fully-Automatic Front Loading Washing Machine (FHT1409SWL, Luxury Silver, Inbuilt Heater)
LG 9 kg Inverter Wi-Fi Fully-Automatic
  • Capacity: 9 kg
  • Type of Control: Fully automatic
  • Form Factor: Frontloading
  • Weight: 62 kg
  • Maximum RPM: 1200

This monster 9 kg washing machine from LG provides a steam wash. Steam is great not only for removing germs but also dust mites that survive a normal wash.

The six-speed direct-drive motor is excellent and never during our tests did it falter in pulling the load. This is a machine that is large enough for a family of 7 and suitable for big families.

The performance of LG’s famed dual inverter motor is perfect, and the speed can vary as required without any drop in the smoothness. There is also most no vibration, but then at this price, we don’t expect a premium machine to have any.

The best surprise is a Wifi enabled full-function remote control. This is a smart machine, and you could operate it from anywhere in the house using the SmartThinQ app.

The inbuilt heater can provide warm water in an instant in addition to steam wash. The washing machine is also capable of heating water to 90° C for a self-cleaning of the drum.

LG has put in all of its technology in this machine and the refinement shows. There is, for example, only a faint drone as it works, and none of the sounds made by the drum escapes outside. The completely waterproof panel ensures that you won’t get an electric shock.

The settings are childproof, and your young one can no longer playfully punch the buttons and change the settings when you are not looking.

Fully enabled with LG’s proprietary Smart Diagnosis, the device can find out any issue in its operation and communicate through an error code. This makes it easy to repair and operate. With intelligent sensing of water level and power usage, it can reduce the consumption of both for a more excellent economy.

  • Premium finish and stunning looks
  • Six-speed motor
  • Direct drive for more torque
  • Wifi remote lets you operate it even from the neighbor’s home
  • Warranty of 2 years on product, 10 years on motor through LG’s extensive network
  • Too pricey for the features
  • Smart Diagnosis shows error codes for minor issues that don’t affect the working of the machine

Best Front Loading Washing Machines Brands in India

1. LG

Lucky Goldstar or LG is a South Korean multinational which has been present in India for about 20 years. The company offers a wide range of consumer durables to Indian customers, including washing machines.

LG offers several washing machines in various categories – front vs. top-loading, semi vs. fully automatic, direct drive vs. belt drive. Not only this, but they would frequently tweak their product lineup to iron out the smallest flaws. On average they launch about 7-10 new models each year in a bid to continually be innovative.

Every company has an innovation to offer, and that is its USP, and LG provides 6 Motion DD Technology. The motor can execute six types of motion from tumbling to stepping, scrubbing, swing, rolling, and filtration. This allows it to subject every kind of fabric to the best wash possible.

LG has always been able to understand the unique needs of the Indian market clearly. Thus it brings features such as smart diagnosis through an app and inbuilt heater, which makes their products truly stand out from the rest.

Dependable and not too expensive, LG has a vast range of washing machines from which we have reviewed a few.

2. Samsung

The Korean giant has always been synonymous with quality and versatility. While Samsung smartphones show us every year that this is a top-end tech hardware company, their fridges and washing machines are no less advanced.

The innate zeal of innovation and aggressive adoption of new technologies marks Samsung out as a top brand. This is backed by its presence in the country from 1997 and a vast dealer network that is unrivaled. It is possible to find service centers for Samsung appliances anywhere in this vast country.

Samsung washing machines feature its patented Eco Bubble Technology. It consists of an air pump that drives millions of bubbles through the soapy water making it foamier. This means that the motor need not churn fast to whip up foam and saves electricity.

It is also the only company to claim that its inverter motor will last at least 20 years. The durability has been certified by Verband Deutscher Elektrotechniker and appears to be a lot more than an idle boast.

The other unusual hallmark of their design is the Diamond Drum. The holes in the tub are recessed in a diamond-shaped groove. This prevents clothes and linen from being damaged during a rugged wash.

3. Whirlpool

Whirlpool is a premium brand from the USA and has been making home appliances for over a century. They had entered India quite early during the late 1980s in partnership with TVS but for the past several years operate on their own.

If we are talking of USP, then Whirlpool offers one that is hard to beat. Their front loading washing machines are imported from Europe. There is quite a lot of attention that products built in Europe, US and Japan receive in India. The reasons are not entirely unfounded, and it is great to be reassured that Whirlpool is selling a product from the same assembly line to you in Delhi that they are also selling in Milan and London.

The best technological feature of their machine is the 6th Sense technology that they also have adapted for use in refrigerators and air conditioners. The washing machine can sense the load and adjust the drum rotation accordingly. The objective is to create as little friction as possible since that causes threads to break.

Washing machines in India have not yet received BEE Star Rating, so it is reassuring to know that the motor is certified A+++ in Europe for energy saving.

4. IFB

IFB is an Indian company that specializes in making washing machines. Though no clear statistics are available, they have a commanding position in the market for washing machines that are priced above INR 25,000.

Their washing machines are demonstrably better engineered, and its durability has been proven by thousands of happy customers nationwide. They are slightly pricier than the competition, but this can only be expected from such a well-regarded brand. IFB clearly markets its products to the discerning customers alone and does not aim at the mid and low market.

The 3D wash system that IFB washing machines incorporate has a novel spraying system that sends out water in all directions. This is highly effective at dissolving all detergents and rinsing it out of the clothes at the end of the wash.

Hard water is a significant problem in most parts of India. An Aqua Energie filter solves the perennial problem of hard water by treating it to make it free of salts. These salts collect inside the machine causing damage and corrosion to the drums. Salts also stand in the way of perfectly clean clothes.

A dominant force in the Indian washing machine market, every year one can expect a new feature from IFB which makes it the numero uno brand.

5, Bosch

Not much needs to be told about German engineering prowess. That fine tradition is upheld by the legendary European home appliance brand Bosch.

Bosch machines come with what is known as Vario Drum technology. What it does is set up a wave-like movement in the water for better washing, but at the same time, it is easy on the clothes. The pulsating flow of water can free grime that otherwise would not be removed.

The other feature you would find useful is the Reload Function. It happens to every housewife. You start the wash cycle and then realize that a t-shirt has been left out. If you are using Bosch, open the door and pop it in using the Reload button.

These are but a few of the innovations that you would find in a Bosch washing machine. Of course, this comes at a price, but it is needless to mention that quality and brand value costs a lot.

The sole problem with this brand is the lack of dependable service centers except in the few larger cities. Hopefully, in the future, Bosch would improve its dealer and service center footprint and give every Indian access to quality products.

Front Loading Washing Machine – The Buyer’s Guide

There is a wide array of washing machines available in the Indian market. They have features such as top-loading, front-loading, semi-automatic, multiple wash cycles that are really hard to understand for those who are not engineers.

It is quite impossible to trust a salesman to be able to describe these features. Not only are they busy with many customers but also with selling the make, model, and type that brings them the most profit.

It is not that washing machines are very complex. They are made of a steel or plastic tub which is rotated with the help of a motor. Clothes are soaked in the tub with detergent. All of the actions are controlled by 2-3 rotary switches or a set of soft-touch buttons.

But it is not the basics that make these wonderful machines. They have many features – capacity, type, function – that require a detailed discussion. Hence we present this buying guide about washing machines in India to clarify all the facts for you.

1. Washing Machine By Loading Type

1.1 Top-loading washing machine

In this case, the tub is vertical, and the clothes are fed in from the top. The tub is connected to a source of water, usually a hose, though water can also be manually poured in. The machine draws water as the washing cycle proceeds. The same tub is used for washing as well as drying the clothes.

They are easy to manufacture and are priced quite reasonably. You could buy a quite high-end top-loading washing machine for INR 20,000. The cheapest ones are priced at INR 7,000.

Top loading washing machines can be automatic or semi-automatic. They are easy to use since you do not have to bend over. This makes them very attractive for the elderly or those with joint pain.

Front Load Washing Machine Parts

  1. They are inexpensive to manufacture. The best top loading washing machines cost the same as the cheapest front-loading machines. This gives an idea of the gulf between the two designs.
  2. The ease of use is maximum. There is no need to bend and no aches either. Moist clothes are heavy, and there is no need to add to the burden of a housewife.
  3. If you have forgotten to add all the clothes, just pop open the top and add them into the tub. It is as simple as that.
  4. They usually have fewer types of washing programs.

  1. The wash quality is never as good as a front-loading machine. The screw inside can only agitate the clothes but not tumble them around. In real life, washing dirt is shaken loose by the slapping of wet clothes against a hard surface. The top loader washing machine cannot mimic this action.
  2. Top loaders need a lot of water.
  3. The top of a top loader cannot be sued for keeping another appliance such as an OTG or microwave oven. In a cramped apartment where space is at a premium, this is a deciding factor.

1.2 Front loading washing machines

The tub or drum is placed horizontally, and a round porthole door opens to give access to it. A front loader is always better than a top loader. It can go through several different steps that top loaders cannot.

These include tumble, stepping, scrubbing, rolling, filtration, swing. All of these are different types of churning that thoroughly remove dirt from the clothes. A top loader only has a screw-shaped agitator but does little to shake the dirt loose.

Without a doubt, a front loader machine is by far better. Also, it has to be noted that front-loading washing machines are always fully automatic.

  1. They clean really well. The level of cleaning is almost comparable to one done by hand. This is because it can slap the dirt loose with a tumbling motion.
  2. The front-loading machines are more environmentally friendly since they consume less water.
  3. They are excellent at washing clothes better and faster due to a huge number of wash cycles and combinations.
  4. The top can be used for keeping another appliance such as microwave or OTG.

  1. Front-loaders are expensive. The cheapest models cost the same as an expensive top loader.
  2. They require the user to bend more often.
  3. Usually, once the wash cycle begins, you are unable to add clothes that you forgot.

  1. Use minimal amounts of detergents prescribed for a particular load. Larger amounts of detergents produce too much foam. This can form a film on the washing drum and on the water outlets which can lead to the formation of mold.
  2. Front-loading machines are very efficient. They do not use a lot of water and thus it is important to remember not to use fabric softeners excessively.
  3. Clear out the washing drum as soon as possible. Leaving washed and damp clothes inside the machine can lead to mold growth.
  4. When idle, do not shut the door of the front loader completely. Leave a small crevice. This improves air circulation on the inside and prevents any moisture retention.
  5. Ensure that the washing speed you choose is in accordance with the wash load. This keeps the clothes from drying up too soon and prevents additional wear and tear of the drum.

If your budget is limited to about INR 15,000 or little more, it is better to opt for a high-end top-loading washing machine. If you have an ample budget from INR 25,000 to 40,000, it is best to opt for a front loading machine.

The latter provides better wash and uses less water. Also, the higher cost implies better quality parts are used. However, due to the huge price gap, the top loaders sell more.

2. Washing Machine By Function Type

Washing machines can be either semi-automatic or fully automatic.

2.1 Semi-automatic

Most semi-automatic machines contain two tubs. One of these is used for washing and the other for drying. Once the first tub completes washing the wet clothes are manually moved to the second tub. Of course, it needs someone present to attend to the task.

The semi-automatic machine is not for those who wish to be away while the machine is working. But due to their simplicity, they are cheaper.

Also, it has to be noted that the two tubs are driven by a belt. This causes more wear and tear and needs replacement.

How does it function?

The working of this machine is quite simple. Water is poured into the tub by using buckets or a pipe. There is no auto water level adjustment, and the process is manual. Following this detergent is added usually measured with a spoon that is provided with the machine. The selector knobs or touch screen allows the selection of fabric type and duration of wash, and the machine is started.

When the cycle completes, the machine rings a bell to let users know. Next using the drain mode, the dirty water is let out. Again water is poured in for the rinse cycle. Following the rinse, the clothes are transferred into the dryer tub.

  1. They are cheap and easy to manufacture. Only top-loading machines are semi-automatic.
  2. They do not need very powerful motors since the clothes are not moved but only a spiral screw shaped agitator.
  3. There is no need for permanent plumbing to provide water. They can operate even without any running water.
  4. It is easy to add clothes in the middle of the cycle.

  1. There needs to be an operator who will fill it with water, drain out water, fill with water for rinsing, and transfer the clothes to the dryer.
  2. The less expensive design means that clothes are rarely washed well.

2.2 Fully automatic

Fully automatic washing machines may be both top and front loading. As opposed to a semi-automatic machine, they only have a single tub for both washing and drying. The machine needs a permanent water connection.

All that is required is to out in the clothes and select the type of wash cycle. The machine does everything from filling water, washing, cleaning, rinsing, and drying by itself. At the very end, you have to take out the dry or slightly moist clothes.

  1. You can spend your time doing something else, such as watching television. You could even leave home. The fully automatic system sets you completely free, and as long as the water is available, the system will work perfectly.
  2. Most of them have a water heater. Hot water is better for cleaning clothes since it kills germs. There is not only a heater but an auto temperature sensor that perfectly understands the warmth of the water and switches the heater off. The heater can heat from 40° C to 90° C and self-clean the drum.

  1. It is much more expensive
  2. They require a steady supply of water to function. Also, a substantial level of water pressure is needed.
  3. They consume much more power than semi-automatic machines.

3. Capacity

The more the number of family members, the greater the load to be washed. The load is not only decided by the clothes we wear but also linen such as bed sheets, table cloth, towels, etc.

These are approximate amounts that washing machines can work with.

Weight Sample load (indicative)Size of family
6-7 kg 4-5 shirts, 4-5 trousers, 2 towels1-3 members
7.5-9 kg6-7 shirts, 6-7 trousers, 3 towels, 1 bedsheetmembers
More than 9 kg 7-9 shirts, 7-9 trousers, 4 towels, 2 bedsheets8-10 members

The other factor that decides capacity is the wash frequency. If you are going to do laundry once a week you would need a larger machine. If you do it 2-3 times a week, then a smaller machine would suffice.

Hence you have to find out the number of times you wish to do laundry, and the total number of items washed each week. When you consult the above chart, you would have an idea about the size of the washing machine that you require. Since the price varies with loading weight in kg of the machine, this is a very important part of the whole exercise.

4. Important New Features

4.1 Inverter Motor

The inverter technology is now prevalent across refrigerators, washing machines, and air conditioners. The motor of a washing machine does not need to run at full speed all the time. If in a 6 kg machine you wash only a couple of shirts, the motor can work at less speed, but the process can clean equally well.

In an inverter technology motor, the speed of the motor is completely variable. If there is less load, then sensors make the motor run slowly. What is good about this is that power consumption is minimized and also the wear and tear. In the long run inverter motor, washing machines save money though the initial cost is a little higher.

4.2 Direct Drive

Traditional washing machines used to have a rubber belt that rotated the cylinder with the help of the motor. This needs more maintenance since the belt would need to be changed at intervals, much like the fan belt of a car.

A direct-drive motor has the drum mounted on the motor axle. The motor directly rotates the tub. This is a much more efficient arrangement and requires less space.

4.3 Flexiwash

Samsung and LG have a Flexiwash option that allows both front-loading machines with very large capacity and a smaller top loader unit in the same housing. Since this is applicable only for very large washing machines of 20 kg capacity, it is not seen much in stores.

The machines have two drums, one for each type of loading. At present these machines are not available in India except by request.

4.4 Auto Select Mode

These washing machines are able to detect the type of load and set a wash cycle automatically. Depending on the load, it finds out the optimum washing solution and uses it.

Not only auto select but some washing machines usually use some sort of fuzzy logic that decides what type of wash cycle is most suitable. With the aid of smartphone apps, it is possible to control these devices from everywhere in the home. On the whole, the washing machines are more autonomous with these features.

4.5 Child Lock

This is a really important feature. You might have taken the time to set the machine to work in a combination of one or more modes. But while you are away from your toddler, he playfully changes the settings and cotton changes to woolen! To avoid this, many machines feature a child lock so that no young member of the family can, by mistake, change the settings.

4.6 Auto Restart

Another innovative function found in washing machines for cities that are prone to power outages. This feature enables the washing machine to remember the stage it was at and resume from thereafter following the outage.

4.7 Bubble Soak

It uses an air pump to pass thousands of bubbles through the water and soap. The bubbles cause more foam and make it possible to clean using less water. This is a nice feature, but it also requires an extra pump inside the machine to generate the bubbles.

4.8 Inbuilt Heater

Warm water is very efficient at cleaning clothes. Even the toughest dirt come loose when warm water and soap is applied. Obviously, cheaper machines can withstand hot water poured in manually. But the best ones have an inbuilt heater. There are sensors that can heat water to the temperature required by the wash cycle and switch the heater off automatically.

4.9 Hard Water Treatment

Hard Water with the salt of calcium and magnesium is a peculiar problem in India. It causes corrosion and clothes to take on a yellowish stain.

IFB has an innovative Aqua Energie technology that converts hard water to soft water. For doing this, it employs special filters. These can reduce the content of salts and prevent early failure of the components.

Hard water causes deposits known as scales. These are very abrasive and cause clothes to tear. Usually, the treatment is done by using some type of filter. However, there is as yet no perfect solution, and different brands claim that their filter is better.

4.10 Auto Dispensing

How much detergent to add to clothes? This has been a long-standing problem. Basically, more detergents would need more water. But if the load is light, then it results in wastage.

The best machines are equipped with auto-dispensing technology. It can find out how much detergent should be added and does so automatically.

Most high-end washing machines have this feature, and it is the best way to save on expenses as well as water, which is a finite resource.

1. How do I prevent clothes from tangling during a wash?

Front-load machines have a side-mounted drum that uses a tumbling action to clean clothes. These systems do not have any agitators. This two-fold difference from top-loaded machines ensures that there is no tangling of clothes.

2 Side-mounted machines use less water and detergent. Does this have an effect on wash quality?

Front-loaded washing machines are very efficient. Most front-loaded models have automatic sensors to estimate load quantity and accordingly alter water input. The amount of water used is optimized for every load. This improves wash quality and also saves water.

3. Why should one opt for an expensive front-loaded machine compared to cheaper top-loaded options?

While it is true that front-loaded machines can be very expensive, in the long run, they do recover a large part of this added premium you pay. They are very efficient machines and save a lot of money due to their minimal usage of water, detergents, and electricity.

4. Do front-loaded machines need a special type of detergent?

Yes, they do. Top-loaded machines use an agitator and a vertical drum setup. They need foaming detergents as the foam contains surfactants, which helps clean dirt from clothes.

Front-loaded machines are more compact and efficient and the horizontal drums have no use for foam. They do not rely on surfactants to do the cleaning.

5. How to remove mold?

While numerous prevention techniques have been listed in the buying guide, clean up or removal of mold need a few steps. A thorough cleaning of the interior of the device including the rubber gaskets covering the door, the hoses and pipes for the water inlet/outlet should be followed up with the use of a descaler. If this does not work, you may have to contact customer care.

Our extensive tests showed us that the clear frontrunner was IFB 7.5 kg Fully-Automatic Front Loading Washing Machine (Elite Plus Vx ID, White).

First of all, it is from a great brand that has plenty of reputation in this field. The washing machine showed us the splendid performance and definitely cleaned grimy clothes better than others in our lineup. The Aqua Energie filters work well to create soft water that definitely makes for better washing.

Also, it is easier to dissolve soap in soft water. It is a little high priced, but quality costs money. The runner up in our tests was Samsung 8 kg Inverter Fully-Automatic Front Loading Washing Machine (WW80J4243MW/TL, White, Inbuilt Heater, Eco Bubble).

It is an 8 kg inverter washing machine from a well-reputed brand for a very affordable INR 30,000. That is a splendid deal. But it is not only about the price. Samsung also wins due to its stellar performance.
