Surprisingly, rice can be the easiest and the toughest thing to cook at the same time. While making rice requires nothing but a few cups of rice and water, making delicious and fluffy rice is something that isn’t guaranteed even if you use the best variety of rice and do everything right.
We at IndianScience understand how time-consuming cooking can get. So we have prepared a list of the best-rated electric rice cookers that you can find online in India after thorough research and testing where we tested over 20 products among the popular brands such as Prestige, Panasonic, Bajaj, Agaro, kent, etc.
Here is a list of some of the things that you should take notice of before you buy a new rice cooker:
- Capacity of the container: The electric rice cookers start with a capacity of 1 L and can go up to 6 L or even more. Many of them have a total of around 1.8 – 2 L, which is sufficient for most families.
- Time it takes to cook: Rice cookers can take anywhere between 15 minutes to over half an hour to cook rice. Some varieties of rice take longer to cook than others. The time taken to cook rice is a critical parameter that affects our choice of rice cookers.
- Keep Warm function: After cooking the food, the quality of insulation determines how long it will stay warm after disconnecting the power supply. But with the keep-warm feature, you can leave the rice cooker plugged in, and it will use a small amount of electricity to keep the rice fresh and warm.
- Non-stick coating: You should also check if the inner cooking pot has a non-stick coating or not. If it does not, then there are chances that a little amount of food may stick to it and burn every time you cook something.
- Removable container: Having a removable lid makes cleaning the rice cooker easy. The price of the rice cookers that have a detachable cooking pot is higher compared to the ones with the fixed cooking pot.

Best Electric Rice Cookers in India (2021)
Apart from the things mentioned above, you should also keep in mind things like looks, build quality, ease of operation, warranty period and other special features before making a purchase.
Now that we understand what to look out for in an electric rice cooker let’s get into the reviews straightaway!
1. Best Overall: Panasonic SR-WA18 E
Panasonic’s rice cookers come in a lot of different shapes, sizes, and different features. However, the one that really grabs our attention is the Panasonic SR-WA18 E rice cooker, and hence, the product has made it to our list.
The exterior of the rice cooker looks a little dull and old-fashioned. It has a white coloured body which is fine, but the indicator looks as if its design is picked from a late 90s product. Nevertheless, the quality of the material used in making its body is solid. The rice cooker has a capacity of 1.8 L, which is also the most preferred value for most people.
You get a cooking plate, measuring cup and a scoop along with the rice cooker. All of which are made with food-grade material. The lid of the cooker is made of steel and fits firmly. The rice cooker also comes with an auto cut-off feature that prevents it from overheating and burning.
For a family of 2 or 3 members, a 1.8 L rice cooker like Panasonic SR-WA18 E is a great choice. The device doesn’t consume much power and get’s the rice cooked in under 20 minutes. The food cooked by this device feels very fluffy. Just make sure you don’t put over 800-900 grams of dry rice as it expands after cooking.
The electric cooker weighs 2.67 Kg. At this weight, it wouldn’t be fair to call it bulky, but it isn’t compact either.
After considering all the factors, we can say that the Panasonic SR-WA18 E is a very capable rice cooker that is priced appropriately. You get a warranty period of 2 years on the product and five years on the heating element, which is rarely seen on other rice cookers in this price range.
- Cooked rice is fluffy
- Durable body
- Auto cut-off feature
- 5-year warranty on the heating element
- Lid fits perfectly
- Design is not attractive; old fashioned
2. Best Runner Up: Prestige PRWO 1.8
Prestige is India’s one of the most trusted brand manufacturing kitchen appliances and cookware. The next product on the list is the Prestige PRWO, a very popular rice cooker with over 4,500 ratings on Amazon.
The product has a white coloured body with floral pattern on it. Even though the body of the product is made entirely out of plastic, it looks and feels good. It’s a regular 1.8 L rice cooker with all the basic features that you will need.
On the front side of the rice cooker, you will find a button that lets you turn on the device. Once the rice is cooked, the cooker automatically shifts from cooking mode to ‘keep warm’ mode. The rice can stay moist for up to four hours in this mode.
The product comes with a stainless steel lid that fits properly and doesn’t let the heat escape. We also liked the quality of insulation provided to the body. Even after a few minutes of turning it on, the handles of the rice cooker didn’t feel warm.
Prestige PRWO can be used to cook a variety of different rice, including brown rice, long-grain, short-grain, basmati etc. There are some user reviews in which people complained about water coming out of the lid when heating, but that issue can easily be solved by putting an adequate amount of water and raising the extra vapour.
You get a five-year warranty on the heating element and one year warranty on the cooker itself. Getting after-sales service from the brand is not going to be an issue at all. So if you are planning to get a simple and durable rice cooker, this might be the right one.
- Heats up rice quickly
- Keeps rice moist for up to 4 hours after cooking
- Well insulated body stays cool when the cooker is on
- Popular on Amazon with 4500+ ratings
- Attractive floral design
- No details about the auto turn-off feature
3. Best Energy-Efficient: AGARO Supreme
It is a mini powerhouse rice cooker that comes with a lot of accessories and features in a tiny form factor. The AGARO Supreme is a 1 L rice cooker perfect for bachelors and couples. Let’s see how good this rice cooker performs in day to day usage.
The exterior of the electric cooker looks very simple. It has a complete plastic body that has some floral pattern on it, and honestly, we didn’t find it attractive. The build quality of the product is good—no complaints in terms of build quality whatsoever. The product comes with a steamer, a cooking pot, a cup for measuring and a spatula for stirring.
It consumes 400W of power which is enough for a rice cooker of this size. Having a low power rating does not mean that the product is slow at cooking. To our surprise, during the tests, the cooker cooked rice within 15 minutes which is quite impressive.
Different varieties of rice require a different amount of water. If you manage the ratio well, the cooked rice does not stick to the container, and the grains are well separated. The device keeps the rice warm after cooking it for a long period of time.
If you have a family of three or more people, you should avoid getting this cooker unless all the members have a small appetite. Of course, if you are living alone or with just one more person, there is hardly any better option.
At around 1,450 INR, we believe Agaro Supreme is one of the best electric cookers that you can buy online. It also has a 1-year standard warranty and a 3-year warranty on the heating plate. Amazon lets you purchase extended warranty plans, too, which are worth it if you are sceptical about trying products from new brands.
- Various accessories
- Affordable price
- Detachable inner lid and power cord
- 3-year warranty on the heating plate
- Ideal for bachelors or couples
- Looks a bit dull
4. Best for Ease-of-Use: Bajaj RCX 5
The Bajaj RCX 5 another popular electric rice cooker that has a capacity of 1.8 L. The device is rated at 550 W and comes with very user-friendly controls.
On the front side, we have a power-on button and two LEDs that indicate the status of the cooker. The front of the electric rice cooker looks similar to most other cookers we have seen yet, except that this one has a plain white body.
The body of the product is made of plastic, and the lid is made of stainless steel. Coming to the interior, the cooking bowl is made of aluminium. The product doesn’t keep your rice warm after cooking it, which is a feature that a lot of people would miss on this device.
Being a 1.8 L rice cooker, it can easily cook around 1 Kg of rice which is enough for a family of three, four or even five members. The cooking process is fairly simple but time-consuming. All you have to do is add three or four cups of water to a cup of rice and turn the cooker on. After waiting for a good 25-30 mins, the rice will be cooked.
We’d say that the rice does get evenly cooked in the Bajaj RCX 5, but the time taken to cook is a bit too much. It’s 25-30 mins no matter whether the cooker is filled half or full.
If you prefer to eat rice soon after cooking it, then you probably don’t need the ‘keep warm’ feature. For such users, we can recommend Bajaj RCX 5. The product costs around a little more than 1,600 INR, and we believe that you can find a rice cooker with more features if you are ready to compromise with the brand name.
- One-touch operation; simple controls
- 2-years of warranty
- Excellent after-sales service
- Detachable inner lid is easy to clean
- Doesn’t keep rice warm after cooking
- Takes 25-30 mins to cook rice
- No safety features
5. Best with Multifunction Mode: Preethi Touch EPC005
For those of you looking for a big rice cooker for a family of 7 or 8 members, the Preethi Touch EPC005 is a fantastic option. The cooker is massive and packed with tons of interesting features.
This electric rice cooker is easily among one of the best looking rice cookers available online. The outer body of the cooker is made of aluminium which gives it a distinct premium finish not found on any other rice cooker we have seen yet. You get a large control panel on the device that lets you pick between the fifteen modes for different Indian recipes.
There is a different mode for everything from the daily essentials like rice, khichadi to special treats like gajar ka halwa, pav bhaji, rajma, chicken and biryani.
The device also comes with a nin-level safety mechanism. The device has different protection schemes designed to protect it from all types of electrical and thermal faults. You can find a complete list of protections on the product page.
We also loved the Preethi Touch EPC005 for its timer function. Not only you can set the cooking time, but you can also set the delay time. What this means is that you can set the delay timer and do your other work, and the cooker will start cooking at the specified time. It’s a feature that is surprisingly missing on a lot of other rice cookers from prominent brands.
You can purchase the 6 L rice cooker for 6,000 INR, which is a fair price for such a nice product. You also get a 1-year warranty on the whole product. If you have a large family of, say 7 members, then you hardly have any choice other than this one. But if you have a family of 5-6 members, then do check out the following product.
- Huge capacity of 6 L
- Fairly priced
- Looks premium with the aluminium body
- 15 different cooking modes
- 9 safety features
- Keep warm feature not present
6. Best for Durability: Kent SS-16021
The Kent SS-16021 electric rice cooker is another large-sized rice cooker for joint families. It is slightly smaller than the previous one at 5 L but still a good name for a family of up to seven members.
The cooker is a 700W machine that comes with a very attractive stainless steel body. In contrast to the Preethi Touch electric cooker, this one has a very minimal front. All you’ll find on the front side is a switch and a status indicator light.
In terms of cooking features, there isn’t much to talk about. The cooker has a keep warm feature in addition to the regular cooking function. We noticed that the rice doesn’t stick to the container or form a thin crust as it does with some other rice cookers. This is due to the fact that the inner container has a non-stick ceramic coating on it.
You get quite a few accessories with the Kent SS-16021 rice cooker. You get a pot, steam tray, rice spoon, soup spoon, measuring cup and not to forget the user manual.
We also noticed that the device is very convenient to serve rice as well. Of course, it is a little heavy to carry around at 3 Kgs but still a nice vessel to serve. Although we didn’t find any issues with the device as such, there are some average customer reviews that make us feel a little sceptical about recommending this one to everyone.
Going by its performance in our review, however, we firmly believe that the product will prove to be a good purchase at 3,000 INR for you if you have a family of up to 6 members. You get a commitment in the form of a 1-year warranty from Kent, during which all repairs/replacements will be free.
- Generous container with a capacity of 5 L
- Free accessories
- Non-stick ceramic coating
- Elegant design
- Average customer reviews
7. Best Premium Looking: Borosil Digikook
The Borosil Digicook is a 1.6 L digital rice cooker (as the brand prefers to call it). The product is suitable for cooking and steaming a variety of rice, pulses and gravies.
The cooker has a very impressive look. Five buttons are provided that let you switch between the different cooking modes. You get an inner cooking pot, steam tray, measuring cup and a serving spoon with the product. You can steam vegetables with rice which saves a lot of time.
After cooking, the food can stay warm for hours inside the rice cooker. The quality of rice is at par with what we see in world-class restaurants. The cooker also has a delay function. Once the timer is set, the food will be cooked when you want it to be.
We also found it very convenient to make soup and other gravies with the Borosil Digikook. Talking about convenience, the product is very easy to use. The handle never gets warm to touch, and the cooking process is quick.
The product has a power rating of 650 W which we believe is more than enough for a 1.8 L rice cooker. The cooker is best for a family of 3-4 members. If you have a larger family, we recommend you to check out the Borosil Instacook, which has a capacity of 6 L and comes with even more features than the Borosil Digikook.
You can get a 1-year warranty for free, and by paying extra, you can extend it for two more years. Even though the brand is asking for 4,000 INR for the Borosil Digicook, we would still say it is a bang for the buck because of its amazing overall experience.
- Can cook rice and steam vegetables together
- User-friendly controls
- Detachable inner lid
- Keep warm technology keeps the food warm for hours
- Delay and timer function for cooking at your schedule
- Slightly costly
8. Best with Auto Cut Off: Butterfly Wave
Butterfly is a brand that believes in offering unmatched variety and perfection to its consumers. The next product on the list is again a 1.8 L Butterfly Wave rice cooker that comes in a bright red body and offers minimal functions at an affordable price.
Truthfully speaking, we didn’t have a great first impression the first time we saw the product. The red colour doesn’t look very attractive on the Butterfly Wave electric rice cooker, but that largely depends on personal outlook. In terms of build quality, we can surely say that the brand has used the best quality material for making its body.
You won’t get all the bells and whistles that come with premium rice cookers, but this one sure does have enough features and accessories to get all your work done.
We also liked the auto cut off feature that is provided with this rice cooker. If you turn on the Butterfly Wave rice cooker and forget to turn it off or don’t put enough water, the cooker can turn itself off automatically.
Even when the cooker is off, the rice stays warm for at least an hour or two. As the case is with other regular size rice cookers, this one too is suitable for a family of up to four members.
Butterfly Wave comes with a warranty period of one year from the date of purchase. It is easy to locate a service centre nearby. If you are not ready to try out new brands, then this one is a good choice at 1,600 INR. If you want to save a few hundred bucks, check out the Agaro supreme rice cooker.
- Decent milk quality
- Affordable price
- Good heat insulation keeps the rice warm even after turning the device off
- Auto turn-off feature
- Detachable inner lid is present
- Looks very simple
9. Cheapest Option: Black + Decker BXRC0101IN
The last product on the list is a small-sized rice cooker that comes from Black + Decker BXRC0101IN. If you have purchased power tools (like a drill machine), then you would definitely know about this brand.
It has a capacity of 1 litre, which is enough for singles and couples. The rice cooker can prove to be very useful for students as well. The rice cooker has a very clean design on the exterior. It has a white body with the branding and control panel on the front side.
Due to its small size, the food inside the rice cooker stays warm for around two hours. It has the keep-warm feature found on most other rice cookers in this price range.
You also get an aluminium cooking container, a cooking plate (for starch separation), a measuring cup and a spoon. There isn’t anything in particular that stands out about the device.
The only thing that is different about the device is its small size. There isn’t much difference in the price of the rice cookers with 1.8 L capacity and the ones with 1 L capacity, so it ultimately depends on how much space you have with you.
We found the price of the product to be on a slightly higher side at 1,700 INR as even the 1.8 L rice cookers cost roughly the same (maybe even a little less). Also, the Amazon product page of the Black + Decker BXRC0101IN does not mention anything about the manufacturer’s warranty. You have to spend extra to purchase a warranty plan from Amazon.
- Small and compact form factor
- Great heat insulation
- Keep warm feature
- Ideal for singles and couples
- Lid can be detached for cleaning
- No clear details about the manufacturer’s warranty
- Slightly high price for a 1 L rice cooker
Frequently Asked Questions
The time taken to cook rice depends on the model of the rice cooker and the variety of rice that is being cooked. As a rule of thumb, be ready to wait for at least 20-30 mins for your cooking to finish.
There are some electric rice cookers that come with a steaming compartment. Check the list of accessories to know if the rice cooker that you are planning to buy has one. You can put the vegetables in that compartment, and when you cook rice in the cooker, the vegetables will be steamed. This will save a lot of your time.
There is no perfect ratio that will guarantee the perfect cooking of rice. It depends on the cooker and the variety of rice. If you prefer to have perfectly separated grains of rice but less water, make sure you put an adequate amount of water though as with less water, there are chances of rice burning and sticking in the pan.
No matter which variety of rice you are cooking, it is always a good practice to rinse the rice with drinking water. It gets rid of the pesticides and the extra starch from the rice. Not washing rice before cooking can give it a gummy texture after cooking.
A well-insulated rice cooker should ideally keep rice warm for around 2 hours. If your cooker has a ‘keep warm’ feature, then the rice can stay warm and moist for even more time.
After carefully considering all the pros and cons, we listed out the three best electric cookers for different purposes.
Agaro Supreme 33307 is the right small-sized electric rice cooker for you if you are living alone or with one more person. The device has a capacity of 1 L and is pretty compact. You can get it for as low as 1,450, which is a steal price for such a nice product.
If you have a family of up to 3 or 4 members, go with Prestige PRWO electric rice cooker. It has a capacity of 1.8 L, perfect for daily use. You won’t get all those different cooking features that you get with cookers like Borosil Digikook, but for 2,000 INR, you get a device from a very reputed kitchen appliances brand that will last for years.
Finally, we recommend the Preethi Touch EPC005 if you require a rice cooker for a family or 5, 6 or even more members. The massive 6 L rice cooker is priced at 6,000 INR and has tons of different features that make it possible for you to cook various different dishes.
That concludes our list of the best electric cookers in India. Do let us know in the comments which one you are planning to buy.
